In our pursuit for wealth and freedom, we get so passionate about investment that any opportunity advertised to us is pretty much bought even before we exchange currency.
Have you ever heard people say ‘I bought air’? It happens.
I am not a victim of the Ekeza and Gakuyo Saccos madness; but, I will not laugh at anyone who has been affected. I sympathize with you. I applaud your courage and tenacity to take such risks to make your future better.
Most of the people who may want to laugh at you think they are safe because they have not been caught yet. I warn them… do not rejoice over another’s pain. You never know what tomorrow could bring.
I would never laugh or mock a well exposed person like you and how you became prey. You are not silly. Search the internet; scams happen all the time; abroad especially. Big, wild scams have happened and that does not make the victims stop living.
In 2008, when Deci was fired up and people were firing money to it, I was very skeptical, I warned people against it but during the same time, there cropped up another multi-level company (whose name I can’t remember) that took the same direction and I fell prey. I did not lose much; maybe about ten thousand. It still hurt. Recently, I read a post on a famous online entrepreneur explaining how he lost almost half a million to an online scam.
My friends really laughed at me back then but I forged forward and carried the lessons learnt and I have been lucky not to lose much afterwards.
Last year, a distant relative lost over 10 Million in another land scam. He even had a title and there was another investor with a replica title. The court ruled in favor of the other investor. Sad; isn’t it?
I can tell you for a fact. There’s no one who is immune to scams but we can be all:
- Extra cautious with upfront payments: – If you have to pay, make sure it’s legally documented.
- Firm on getting documentation: -Other people ask you to pay agents or lawyers and ask you to transfer money to accounts you cannot understand. Do not yield.
- Patient and gut-sensitive: – These deals that come quickly; end quickly. Be a little patient and then follow your gut. That sixth sense; it speaks the unknown. Give it attention.
- Consult: – Am sure there are couples who are revealing right now that they had invested in those SACCO’s while their partners would have helped them. Maybe.
Home owners, prospective home buyers fall prey to scams often. Mostly because they come from people who have been in the business and they are experts, they have the facts and the game at their finger tips. Others maybe (like in this case) recognized leaders; they ride on their image while other maybe even family members or former colleagues.
I cannot advise you not to take risk. I will just advise that you be extra-careful in your dealings. If possible, buy land from people who live in it. Like the way people up-country cut a piece of their ancestors land and sell.
Please do a thorough search; even if you have to pay CID’s. This is a must. Enforce a third party to be a witness because if things go bad, the court will require you to have a witness.
I wish you all the best in your dealings.
How I wish we will be our brothers’ keeper and encourage each other on this journey.
